Remember Elite? And Wing Commander? Well, the guys who created them has something new up their sleeve:
Elite Dangerous (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous)

Uhh close but no cigar.
Maker of Elite is making Elite Dangerous
Maker of Wing Commander is making Star Citizen
both old news but I have already pitched in for Elite Dangerous because I love the Braben.

I backed Elite: Dangerous too. I loved Frontier: Elite 2; however, times have changed, and I don't think I'll like the new one half as much. I tend to prefer shorter games with replayability, not long grinding games. I guess we'll see.

Well, over two years have passed, so what are your thoughts on the game? I'm interested, but would like to hear some non-press opinions before going in.

The guys from Elite have delivered, while the Wing Commander guys are still mostly talking about how great their game will be.
I played Elite: Dangerous for a couple of days and then stopped. It is very much like the original Elite. You fly around making money, but if you want a purpose, you have to make that up yourself. True, there is a background simulation, a bit of story and community goals, but the player's influence is neglectable. It is a sandbox, where everything you do levels out very quickly.
And that is exactly as David and his crew wanted it to be. They promised an almost endless galaxy, space trucking, a few side jobs and that's what you get.

Thanks for the response, Zharkov.
How would you judge the difficulty? I have never seriously played the original, is the learning curve very steep?

It's some work. I crashed a few ships learning to land and even more in fights, there are a lot of buttons you have to learn to use, there is no friction in space (I like this) and even when the other pilots don't try to kill you, there are still accidents. Then, there are some in-game rules enforced by the in-game police, mostly with deadly force. There is no trial and no appeal. Still nothing compared to what Dioxine throws at us on a regular basis! ;)
