This game never die!Wrong thread; You're supposed to be introducing yourself here
Another X-Com. Hope this one survive. I like your idea.
You think is a way to add the Seb76 features into game? Already see you "about" and look like yes.
Best of luck.
Moritz, 32, from Germany.Another Project Xenocide refugee! ;) Nice to have you around.
I've been playing the x-com games for years (don't know when I started... '95? first contact was at a friends house, he was playing a nighttime battlescape mission with a landed harvester UFO and it was absolutely creepy).
I've been writing some stuff for Project:Xenocide a while back.
In RL I'm a physician (specializing in anaesthesiology), but at heart I'm a geek of natural sciences.
Now one question: Do Day/night cycles work like original X-Com or more like real-life (Where it stays dark for like 5 months I think down there) ?I think it works more like real-life? You'd have to check yourself.
Hello everyone,Oh another Xenocide comrade :D what department were you in?
Jei from the USA, I have been watching finally decided to join, I am a computer Engineer, that likes game development, i have tried to help in many teams, sadly they all have "followed the light" Have played Xcom since... it was released it was the only think that kept me sane while in the service :D Attempted to help in Xenocide, with good old RedKnight.
In any case i hope the project keeps moving forward, maybe i will help out with the Spanish translation there are a few strings that i don't like and considered incorrect Spanish.
See you around.
Oh another Xenocide comrade :D what department were you in?I was in creative text dept. I am not a programmer, i can read and used to debug at one point in my life but didn't keep up with it. :S
Hey all,
I'm Joshua, 18 years old, and I've just started playing Xcom and I'm really enjoying it. In my first five missions, my whole squad of 8 died twice. It was rough, but really fun. Not saving during battles makes it a LOT more fun. It makes the story of the game much more interesting. The humans totally failed a few times, but they are learning that they need to equip their soldiers better!
Speaking non-English is fine as long as you understand each other (and I can totally read that :P).
Btw: Am I the only Microprose fan that was actually reading all those fat manuals (houndreds of printed pages) ? Railroad tycoon, grand prix1/2, xcom etc. ? :)Nope. :P
Hey everyone, I'm Mustang.Hey mustang, I remember you! Weren't you in one of the xcomufo x-com games back in the day? :) Wonder if there's any more oldies from those forums hanging around.
I recognize SupSuper from the xcomufo forums I frequented when I was ~12, looks like he's been up to a lot, hah. This time around I just finished my fourth year at university for software development, so I'd like to take a look around the code of Open X-Com and see what I can do. I've got summer ahead of me and I gotta stay sharp on my C++ :P
Hey mustang, I remember you! Weren't you in one of the xcomufo x-com games back in the day? :) Wonder if there's any more oldies from those forums hanging around.Sure was! I know j'ordos still hangs around that forum and continues to update his Apoc utility but I'm not sure about any of the other guys, I haven't visited there in several years :P
Welcome to the forum! :)
Don't worry, I am no computer scientist either, I have a degree in Ecology and even I managed to create some basic mods and helped to improve the more advanced ones. It's easier than you think.
[offtopic]Hope one day someone may pos a fool-proof guide about editing, for eg. I can't even figure where to start ??? plus, don't know if i'll have enough spare time[/offtopic]
Well it's about time I write something here. :)Wow, there's other fans in Portugal??? :o There's hope for us yet.
Hello everyone, my name is André and I'm from Portugal. I first started playing X-COM: Apocalypse in 1997 (which is still one of my favorites in the series) and I only got to UFO Defense later. I've been active on the X-COM community ever since and I've written a 693 page fan fiction novel about the original game called XCOM: The Unknown Menace (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/245417/1/XCOM-The-Unknown-Menace), as well as being a part of the UFO2000 team (a multiplayer remake of the original game) and I'm currently an administrator for the UFOPaedia (https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page).
That's about it. :)
As some of you may have guessed from my name, I am a fan of Iron Maiden, but I also love Rush, Blind Guardian, ACDC, etc, etc.
Hello all, I am 34 (35 in 9 days :o :o) from southern Brazil... you know, that country that was raped 7-1 by Germany while hosting the World Cup. But since I am from a city called Novo Hamburgo, there were quite a few people celebrating here haha.
Also Welcome from me Jay!
You could give my Mod a try -> Research Alive Aliens :)
Welcome to the OpenXcom community, pilot00!
Hi, I'm just your friendly neighborhood Bloax.
I haven't actually played this game yet, but it certainly looks like my kind of game judging from the multiple LPs that I've seen.
This is probably the high time for me to start poking around, since modding is finally a thing. (I love me some modding.)
And of course the community around here will probably like me better than crawl's did, since you guys seem like a decent bunch.
Greetings from the caribbean, folks.
I never expected to come across a project like OXC and its thriving community. I always thought myself a bit odd for liking what seemed to be such an obscure strategy game as a kid (my friends were all enamoured by more action-y titles). I hope to participate and contribute to discussions with like minded people who, like me, loved the seemingly obscure (and frustratingly difficult) little game called xcom.
Cheers
Cheers from Nippon. Heh, somehow I skipped over the introduction forums before making a couple of posts. I found OpenXCom after being disappointed with the Firaxis release and trying to figure out how to get the old UFO to work on my netbook. I'm just blown away with the whole project! to take an old classic, which was arguably ahead of its time, and make it a modern port is cool as hell. It's kind of like what the Stracciatella mod did for Jagged Alliance 2 (or the 1.13 project before it got all stupid and bloated).
I'm just happy my old favorites are playable again. Anyway, thanks for OpenXCom!
Hello from France, my name's Guillaume. I was playing X Com 2012 when I ran into the Piratez mod and now I am addicted once again on the classic xcom.
Hi guys 'n girls,
my name is Christoph, I'm 33 years old with a strong passion for old and strange movies, video games and music (and a little less strong passion for sports and drawing).
Like a lot of others here I must have been around 12-13 years old when I first played X-Com. I also was a huge fan of the X-Files and UFO-related media in general, so when I first saw X-Com it hit a spot.
X-Com is also one of the reasons I still love pixelish graphics, they just leave so much room for imagination.
This place, the developers, the community, the attitude .. it's just great :-) I really enjoy it.
So have a good time everyone, see you around!

Sectiplave here hailing from a country that is "interestingly" represented in Xcom's geoscape, and appears to be missing an entire island, little New Zealand :D
I thought that such thread could be nice ;) For new members, who would like to say hello :)Heh, not gonna lie, I'll probably be the last person to get on with original xcoms come the release of XCOM 2. I always liked XCOM, ever since my friend showed it to me. Funny too, because he showed me XCOM: UFO DEFENSE about 2 years ago and it blew my mind. I used to play UFO: TTS and it was pretty impressive. Unfortunately the game's forums (and the development) are 4 years dead, with nobody on the internet with a tutorial on it. Not to mention it was my first DDos game since playing XCOM: UFO DEFENSE, so multiplayer was a no-go. I'm probably the youngest one here too. I'm a freshman at highschool and I really look foward to XCOM like games, but not the newer ones as much. I always liked grid based movement game, and I'm not sure why. I must've put 100+ hours into pokemon blue when I was 11 so I guess that was my enlightenment.
Second, I have started playing openxcom (Something a lot more alive thank god) and I bet I'll sound like an asshat for saying this, but are there any texture packs or mods to up the graphics? I guess open might not be for me. The reason why I question this is because I saw a mod showcasing a vehicle or something but the guy had a sick visual mod that made everything smoothed out.
Please respond to this, I really need the beginning push to get me started. I'll check my e-mail everyday.
Now I'm able to play a little now and then and I just love that the game is like the original but with just small additions.
Hi.
I'm Bionic and I live in Sweden. I used to play the original as a kid and I've always remembered it as one of my best gaming experiences. I distinctly remember the first time I ever saw a Muton!
One day I saw the game on steam and thought I'd give it another try. It was still as good as ever, but it wasn't precisely a smooth experience on a new machine. Then I found this project and it was like spooning Santa Claus. The customability, the modding! It's almost too good to be true. My free time is suffering severely, please send help.
Hello all,
My name is Chase and I live in Omaha, Nebraska. I used to watch my friend play TFTD on Windows 95 when I was super young. That game terrified me! Then in high school another friend let me start on his saved campaign for UFO defense on easy. Frankly, I didn't know what I was doing, but I played for like a year IRL before I finally went to Cydonia. He already had the avenger when he first gave me the save file. I was quite the noob.
Then in 2012 I replayed TFTD on veteran start to finish after I had just quit my job. I didn't do anything for about 2.5 weeks. It was so great. It would've been faster but I had a stint where I had to play almost 20 full base defense missions against lobster men and bio-drones while I waited for the bombardment shield to finish. That was just awful. Truly awful. I don't deserve the win anyway because I save scummed my way through the whole game. I'm not proud of it. How else could I finish the defense missions?
A few months ago I randomly decided to look up the OST on youtube because I thought it would be fun to hear the music again. I noticed a few LPs and then realized what was going on. I can't tell you how exciting it was to see that there has been this lively community of Xcom fans developing the game and modding it. I finally bought a new gaming laptop and I am super anxious to get started. No save scumming this time! I promise!
First things first: where do I go to donate money to the people who host this forum? I already gave $40 USD to the Openxcom.org post that is currently on the front page. Maybe somebody could tell me who the most deserving modder is? Please be objective. I am not an idiot who wants to toss away money. I truly value the work everyone is doing here, and I think it's only fair that I contribute in exchange for the hours and hours of enjoyment I would get from openxcom.
So, I am still a little lost. Since I am not up-to-date on news, etc. could somebody please tell me where I can find the latest and most stable version of UFO Defense?
Jo5hua is the one hosting the forums. As for the modders, I don't think anyone here is receiving donations, and as for the most deserving, there would be a long list of them ;)AFAIK Jo5hua is hosting mod portal (and recently https://ufopaedia.org), forum is hosted by NineX.

Thanks a lot, everyone! And shout out to Meridian for his TFTD and Openxcom FMP Let's Plays!
BTW if you know who remastered the music please let me know. He/she is a prime target for donation since I am super impressed with the music.
I am still wondering where to go to get started playing. It seems clear that step 1 is to buy UFO defense on steam and then to make sure I get the Windows patch. Where do I go to get the final mod pack, and how do I install it? Maybe I am making things too complicated. I just worry that since all this stuff is open source I could screw it up or create bugs if I am not careful. Is there a page for complete noobs to the FMP which will explain how it works?
Also, what's up with the Pirate and Bootypedia thing? It looks like a lot of new info that I probably would not want to try to keep track of this time around. Is all that stuff part of FMP or is it separate? Thanks again for the help!
If you mean the music from my FMP LP, that was done by Lorcan: https://openxcom.org/2015/06/updated-ufo-cydonias-fall-soundtrack/
I'll make a short how-to video for you on Sunday.
PirateZ is completely separate from FMP. It is a total conversion (i.e. mod that completely changes the game instead of extending it).
It's definitely worth looking at... but as I said, try the vanilla OpenXcom first... then maybe some mods (Area 51, FMP, Xeno Operations, Hardmode, etc.) and then...
Good luck with the project. A good ruleset editor would be really neat.
There is no better ruleset editor then vim (https://www.vim.org/) in combination of YouCompleteMe (https://valloric.github.io/YouCompleteMe/). Its the ultimate tool.vim can be great, but it's not exactly quick to pick up (at least to me, I've been sort of using it for years but I am still far, far away from knowing how to properly use it). That YouCompleteMe thing looks neat, thanks for pointing it out.
As for a ruleset editor, what I think would be great is the ability to collapse sections and items, along with pre-populating entries.
Did you try geany (https://www.geany.org/)?

Hello, my dear folks of the old worlds.....
So, IseijinBoueiSenben97, Do you make a new forum account every year or something? :)
Greetings.
I'm a rather large orb shaped alien (Well, "alien" at least from your perspective) brain that spends most of its time chilling in the Cydonia region of Mars.
Recently I learned of OpenXcom and the excellent modding community that is associated with the project.
So far I've already completed a quick run through of X-COM: UFO Defense and I'm pleased to say that the gameplay has aged quiet well. I'm actually having more fun replaying the old X-Com games with OpenXcom then I did with the modern versions.
I Look forward to interacting with you all on this forum and -

Yay! A new retro teen gamer! High five from another teem!
If I say that my other time-sink is Oolite, I'd be very surprised if I needed to clarify that I'm not talking about limestones with a millimetre-scale spherical granular structure.I had never heard of either up until now, however Google showed the second of them to me first.
I like Oolite too! (The game).I grew up digging fossils (mostly rynchonellid brachiopods, but others too) out of oolite limestones in the local quarries.
Hi everyone, I am Ikara and I have just now joined this forum.
I'm also curious about the 40k mod and X-Com Files, though I want to save the last one for until I am *very* confident in my tactical skills. From what I've seen, Solarius Scorch doesn't pull any punches when it comes to challenge.A lot of the mods here are punishingly difficult. If you can play X-Piratez, I think you can play the X-Com Files. Each mod will have its own learning curve, they're generally all more difficult than the original game, but none of them are really unplayable to most veteran X-Commers.
Hi everyone,
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Nina, I'm 25 and I'm living in Hamburg (Germany). I work as a web designer and in my freetime I love to share my interests with others.
I hope to have some nice conversations exchange within this great network! :)

It's everything I wanted the 2012 re-make to be. Simply the original game except with updated UI and other creature comforts.
