Title: Youtube videos
Post by: michal on September 08, 2012, 09:29:22 am
People in comments are suggesting more youtube videos. I too think it's good idea to have videos showing new features.

It would be great if someone could make video in such style (with commentary):

I have considered doing a commented video or even a livestream to get more attention on the project, I just worry me talking might just scare people more. :P Let me know if you'd be interested.

It would be great to have more youtube video's. It's the place where video games become popular these days, with let's play videos or reviews on youtube. I made a few silent ones with new features on previous releases. I recorded one with my voice and it was scary, so I never put it online, lol, but I think everyone has that the first time. But if you are brave and do one with talking, people realise there is actual people working on this project :)

Go for it SupSuper :D If you afraid how you sound, you may record some sample video and add it to youtube as hidden (only ppl with link can see it) and put link here or send pm to couple of persons ;) Then we can tell you if you can go public ;)

I plan on making some with the attention added to the MOD side of Openxcom , still not sure about using my voice though :P

Was all set to make a video tonight but for some reason Openxcom refuses to play music or sound effects in my NEW Win XP virtual machine, the windows itself has no problem with sounds , just openxcom has a issue ( same files work perfect in another VM i use for my modding). So i thought i would boot up in windows , rebooted system  , viewed GRUB , no sign of windows anywhere ( haven't used it in 2 years) , i do know its still on the hard drive , i can see the files........ Some things are never easy :P

I'd suggest checking your options.cfg to see if OpenXcom muted itself at some point.

The Config file looked ok, couldn't see any reason why it would be silent so i just renamed it and let openxcom create me a new file, This gave me sound but that created a new problem.
In game the music TEMPO speeds up and slows down depending on what i am doing on screen , i figured that would sound really crap on a Youtube video so i left the sound effects on only.

OK must of made 50 movie tonight , hopefully i can piece one good final product together by next week, really not sure about my voice on it :o   This Video was focused on my Expanded Terror Map but i plan on recording some INSTANT BATTLE ones also next week and just start pushing the project , the next setback for me will be finding some video editing software - i don't think i own any :P

SupSuper, Daiky - Any news on official youtube video?

I'll probably make a video next weekend, I got some uni work to do and I wanna make sure there's no nasty bugs left to embarrass me. :P

Bugs which could embarrass you in video? Or you're planning to release 0.45 nest weekend? ;)

FYI: i have uploaded 2 short videos to Youtube just showcasing what i am working on.

Here is the first one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw6_7PWVsdo

As you can see i have currently gone against using my voice  :P

FYI: i have started work on some Support tutorial to go with the information on the MOD site, first one is up ( as long as the copy right claim doesn't bite me in the bum)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=7ErO2K-TqnE

Once again , no voice , it just not easy to talk about something "Freestyle" and i am too lazy to right a script of what to say in advance  :P
Title: Re: Youtube videos

It's hard to follow what you're trying to do without any narration, you should at least use subtitles.

Also, I've settled on making an OpenXcom video after 0.4.5 (which should be out within this week), since it's very hard to work on both at once. :P

Volume was really loud for me (Yes, I did turn my volume down, still, rattled the windows for a second  ;) ), but looked good. I agree with SupSuper about making it more obvious what you're doing, and maybe "why" you're doing it too.

Good job!

some one complained about the video quality also , i may re-make this tutorial  ( i will most likely make another one going over the same stuff )

What are you using for recording that? recordmydesktop? I see you're using linux.
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: luke83 on October 16, 2012, 12:05:37 pm
Yep Record my desktop , its the only one i could find that works , so now to work out How to improve the video quality ?

Follow up question , how do you know i am using Linux?
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: pmprog on October 16, 2012, 12:19:13 pm
Can see the Ubuntu title bar above your Windows screen, so looks like you're using a VM  ;D

I'm afraid I can't really help with screen capturing on Linux. I use FRAPS and CamStudio on Windows
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: michal on October 16, 2012, 12:43:57 pm
Luke, does file created by recordmydekstop had better quality? I've used it and i think it does good quality. Have you tried changing some settings?
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: luke83 on October 16, 2012, 12:47:30 pm
I have used Cam studios at work , compared to this "Record my desktop" its awesome.

"Luke, does file created by recordmydekstop had better quality? I've used it and i think it does good quality." I think it slighly better then the Youtube video version , not sure why it would loose quality though.

I cant see any options in "Record my desktop to improve quality :(

I just made a QUICK video making a small Mapblock in the jungle setting again, this time i changed my screen resolution of the VM - waiting to see if its any better or not?

UPDATE: Just remembered you can change the FONT size in windows control panel, Now the text is very clear but the page VM looks so very ugly :P

Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: pmprog on October 16, 2012, 12:50:51 pm
What codec (+settings) are you using? It might be the codec you've got set up.

You could try with "Uncompressed Frames", which will give you a massive (and I do mean MASSIVE) file, but it would record in crisp quality, then you could use something like VLC to convert the video to an MP4 for YouTube upload
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: michal on October 16, 2012, 12:53:35 pm
You're using recordmydesktop or gtk-recordmydekstop?

Gtk version has nice window, where you can change setting, pick which window to record, etc.

Post by: luke83 on October 16, 2012, 01:05:39 pm
Just normal "recordmydesktop" .

i have tweaked some settings in my video edit software "oneshot video editor" and i also recorded my VM in a different Resolution  as soons as its working i will upload it and make it private so you guys can give me some more feedback.
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: michal on October 16, 2012, 01:15:07 pm
Here are available options:

https://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/manpage.php

As for openshot, i managed to get not so bad quality by encoding to mpeg2 in hd resolution and uploading to youtube.

As for private video, just prepare small sample - one minute or so.
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: SupSuper on October 16, 2012, 03:04:40 pm
Youtube always does reencoding on its end, so your uploaded video will always have less quality than the original, although the better the original, the less noticable it'll be. Here are some guidelines: https://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=guide.cs&guide=1728585

It might be related to using virtual machine - it uses some part of machine resources. You might want to try OpenXcom version compiled for linux. I can send you one.

Thanks for the offer , i would not mind trying a Linux Version of Openxcom , its been SOOOOOOOO long since i have  ;)

Biggest problem i have is all the Mod tools are Windows based and  i have not had much luck getting WINE to handle them :P

Your voice is fine luke, very easy to understand. :) Only problem is you should clean up the background noise with an audio editor next time.

Since the programs are .NET-based, have you tried using Mono instead?

Audacity (https://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is what I use, it's free, cross-platform, and has plenty of helpful guides: https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Noise_Removal
It only works with audio files though, so you would have to record your mic and screen separately and combine them afterwards. I can post my video process later if you think it'll help.

Mono (https://www.mono-project.com/) is a cross-platform .NET Framework, it (usually) lets you run .NET programs on any platform, even if they're EXEs, so it might help you out with MapEdit.

I think slightly better mic and/or audiocard will do this job much better than any audio editor. Cleaning noise after recording is not very good idea, since there still will be some (and quite a lot, if my hear it right) audible artifacts.

You could use VirtualDub (https://www.virtualdub.org/) (it's free) to combine and synchronize your audio and video streams (among the other things (https://www.virtualdub.org/features.html) it can do).

@michal: That would be a good idea. And from Luke's impressive presentation, it's a worthy initiative
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: luke83 on October 18, 2012, 09:33:56 am
Haha , my current Mic only cost me  $10 ( about the same price as a large mcdonalds meal), lets see how the Audio editor works first on cleaning things up. If we get to a point where i need to add a audio card i will save up for a new PC first and get one put in , i am estimating this to be the last year of this one before something explodes ;)

Recording the video seperate to the sound is no big problem , i lost 80% of the sound that went with that last video so i just talked into the Mic whilst watching it.
Title: Re: Youtube videos
Post by: michal on October 18, 2012, 09:34:40 am
Anyone knows what's the prices of good mics?

I've found that:

https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PDMIC58-Professional-Handheld-Microphone/dp/B003GEBGA0/ref=pd_cp_MI_0

Costs, $12.88 - so i guess 20$ - 30$ should be enough for good mic? Or not?

Dosbox recorder, i could not work that ... I specified my location to store the files in the config, then i tried (Ctrl+Alt+F5) , turns out thats a bloody Ubuntu hotkey , so 3 hours later i found how to remap the Dosbox keys but then i still was not getting a recording so either the key change did not map or my config is wrong, the nights almost over and i have done nothing of value.

As a last ditch effort , i went digging through all my old computer Junk boxes ( filled with ram , HD, cables, lost games etc ) and eventually found a cable to plug my Audio out into my Microphone in, 5 mins stuffing around with my systems Sound volumes and Happy day it works.

The moral to this story is this , Unless your a rocket scientist or a computer programmer  , you should just look for the quickest way to fix things, Once again my IQ level let me down :P.

If you're looking for software. FRAPS didn't seem to want to record OXC, however, I've been using OBS (Open Broadcast Software) for my Let's Play. However, if you use fullscreen, all it will capture is part of the mouse cursor. Windowed mode works fine.

OBS can be used to live stream and/or record locally

FRAPS probably doesn't work because OpenXcom isn't hardware-accelerated, but any desktop-capturing utility like HyperCam should work well.
