I think that next version shouldn't be numbered 0.5 as it will be finishable game, with all gameplay feature implemented. 0.5 would give false impression, that there are lot of things still to implement.
I'm thinking it should be numbered 0.9, so there still will be place to fix bugs and implement some forgotten functionality (in case that happened) before 1.0.
-
i'm voting 1.0, because to me at least, 1.0 represents a complete and fully playable game.
the "enhanced and extended" features planned for the next stage feels more like a "2.0" type of thing, and 0.5 sounds like we're only half way done.
-
I voted 1.0, but the next version should contain at least one RC :)
-
I voted 0.9, because I think that 1.0 should be reserved for something at least 99% bug-free, and I think that we will find some more (read: a lot) after the next release, because that's when (regular) people will start some serious play-testing. I think 1.0 should then be released about three weeks after next release :)
-
If it is playable and completable, yeah, v1.0 should be the answer. :)
-
I voted 0.9 because even if you can finish the game there is still some stuff missing to be called 1.0
-
I dont think it should be 1.0 as 1.0 should have some better Resolutions OR a scaler to activate, just what i think anyway :P
-
Luke, but we need something for > 1.0 ;)
-
After 1.0 > TFTD , Factions ,Crazy Stuff ,Other Graphics , there HEAPS of stuff for after 1.0 , this is just the beginning!
-
I vote for 0.9 if plenty of bugs still exist.
-
i vote for 0.5, because 0.9 is too optimistic. it's never late to jump on 1.0, but it will be problem to enlarge 0.9->1.0 distance.
-
I perfer 0.9 and not object 0.5.
Most player assume ver 1.0 is not only a completed game but also bug free( at least with some minor bugs.

My thought exactly!

I'd go for 0.9. If there exist a need for a extra version before 1.0 we can still make a 0.10 in an emergency.
Edit: Version 1.0 is a complete version of a Xcom game and I think the openxcom must present the community it as a standalone open source game that faithfully represents the original one. After that is done, the openxcom team can decide what new project they plan to start based on v1.0 for v1.0+. Be it an editor for openxcom, multiplayer or whatever.
-
0.9 is typically used to indicate a betaversion, betaversion being: (almost) fully functional but not guaranteed stable/bugfree.
There is still room for intermediate versions: 0.9.1, 0.9.2, 0.9.3, ...
-
OpenXcom after the next release will be almost finished game. But still it will not be completely free of the small flaws. So I vote for 0.9.
-
I vote for 0.5, just because I don't see why people would assume versions come in 10s (0.1 - 0.9), they're not decimals, just a reference number. :P
-
i don't see why people keep giving EA money.
just because you don't see why they do it, doesn't mean they don't do it.
-
we can always use decimal points 0.99999999... :D we will have infinite space to add new 9 to version number and be closer to 1 :)
-
I vote for a fractional version number. Or vπ. Because everyone loves pi
e ;D

If I was doing it, I'd go:
0.75 -- Completable game. We *think* we got all the bugs.
0.9 -- So we missed a couple things; like the game reformatting your hard drive:
Myth II installer bug
The original version of the Myth II: Soulblighter contained a serious bug. The bug was that the CD contained an uninstaller which would remove Myth from a computer by deleting the directory in which it had been installed. If the user had overridden the default and installed Myth to the root level of his hard drive, the uninstaller would delete the entire contents of the user's hard drive.
This bug was caught after Myth II CDs had been sent out and also duplicated and boxed to ship to stores. Bungie employees went to the factory, tore open the boxes, and replaced the faulty CDs with new CDs on which the uninstaller bug had been fixed. Luckily, only the marketing person who discovered the bug had his hard drive wiped. Martin O' Donnell confirmed all this data in an episode of the Bungie Podcast.
But we fixed them; so enjoy 0.9!
1.0 -- No major bugs have emerged since 0.9 was released; so here's 1.0.
It's worth noting that OpenTTD; one of the best Open Source games, took three years (2007-2010) to go from 0.5x to 1.0x releases; and the full reimplementation was released as 0.1x
