Over the last little while I've been thinking about early game ways of catching live Aliens.
As far as I know the only 3 ways you can catch them before gaining the stun launcher are:
- Stun Rod
- Tazer Pistol (mod by Ryskeliini)
- or just shear luck
Given that 2 of these are close range (and often deadly), I came up with the Idea of a researchable grenade that spewed knockout gas.
This is the result - the MediGas grenade.
(I've based the sprite off the games Smoke Grenade, but I'm no artist, so if any one has a better one feel free to let me know please)
The research topic unlocks when you research at least one of the Alien Autopsy's - Once researched it can be manufactured fast and cheaply from smoke grenades at a cost of $75 a unit .
For those interested in its power - It has an attack power of 35 with a blast radius of 3
This mod is usable but still not complete because I haven't got any translations other than English (since that's the only lanuage I speak) so if anyone wants to add a translation (or has a problem with a translation), please let me know and I'll see about adding them.

The text to translate is
STR_MEDGAS_GRENADE: Medi-Gas Grenade
STR_MEDGAS_GRENADE_UFOPEDIA: Combining the trigger mechanism from a smoke grenade with a small pressurized canister of Anesthetic Gas, these grenades are an ideal (if low strength) way to capture live Aliens
I'll add more translations as people send them to me - this will probably go to the mod site when I have 12 -15 translations.
Not Compatable with May 7th+ nightly (will fix when I Can)

i tried a acid-grenade once and it did not work i see no differencve between your item and mine - strange

Yes it works - I've been using it for several weeks now and had no problems with it (other than the fact it takes quite a few grenades to drop Mutons and Floaters - up to 6 on one ocasion!)
I tend to equip each member of the squad with 3-4 grenades - especaly on terror missions.

There is a similar mod but it requires research of a stun bomb, the stun grenade.

From the name, I thought you had made something with negative damage to heal your soldiers :)
In any case, this sounds balanced, and I like how it's not redundant with the stun grenades mentioned above, they're stronger but happen in later part of the game.

Yes, the Idea was to create a weapon that could be used within the first 3 or so UFO's rarther than wait for the stun launcher to turn up on the 5 or 6th terror mission.

tried your exact mod with damge changed to acid - does not work :( i suppose devs only implemented stun/he/smoke (=vanilla) explosions

I'm currently keeping the mod updated as I get the translations. Current version is in the first post.

Maybe something snappy and to the point, like Medigas or Medibomb.

Hypno-Grenade? Morpheus Bomb? 8)
NarcBomb or Narcobomb or Narco-Grenade would also be valid :)

Roxis, I allowed myself to include your grenade in the FMP mod collection.
However, I changed the tech tree a little to make it more in line with the rest of the mod, mostly the Dart Rifle segment, which already deals with putting aliens to sleep. I hope you don't mind.

Nice idea, though I always thought the difficulty in capturing aliens prior to the stun launcher was a good part of the game.
I'd like it if smoke could effect them like it effects our soldiers....

Doesn't smoke do the same thing? Is this 35 damage one time, or leaving a cloud over a few rounds, or what?

As far as I've seen in the game, smoke only seems to affect YOUR troops, not aliens or civilians.
Not sure if this is a bug/glitch or if it was coded that way.

Also, I think Smoke does affect aliens. When I have probed them if they were exposed to smoke, I thought they were taking stun damage. But smoke is so slow acting, it seems like it is not really useful for knock out purposes.

Edit: also: Does the gas affect soldiers? How about in armor? i.e. if the cloud lingers and my troops run in, will they drop?

Ivandogovich - like the small launcher, It's a one time hit so it doesn't affect anything after it goes off.
but be warned, like the small launcher, it's non-discrimitory ie it hits every one.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. May be more like a "Flash-Bang" grenade then. :)
I'd guess it leaves the same type of residue as stun bomb then. Not a proper smoke cloud.
