UFOs dissapearing within range of the hyperwave decoder?
« on: June 05, 2014, 09:28:14 pm »
For some reason, UFOs now are starting to dissapear randomly, even when they are within range of my 3 bases with hyperwave decoders all at once. Any reason why? They aren't anywhere near the edge of the radar coverage circle.

If the UFO has finished its mission, it will just despawn, they can't circle the globe forever.

(They go back to space, and detection doesn't work so far away "up")

Yes, there seems to be a detection problem. I don't think it's random. The radar coverage circle and the effective radar detection seems do not match.

Save: https://speedy.sh/gMuFV/Radar.sav

UFO-220

Just before the UFO disappears (outside the radar coverage circle):

Just after the UFO appears (far inside the radar coverage circle):

There is also 2 alien bases at London in this save.

radar updates happen every thirty minutes, meaning the UFO can move well inside your detection radius at 15 minutes past the hour, and he won't be picked up on hyperwave until 30 minutes past. likewise, detected UFOs leaving your detection radius won't become "undetected" until the half hourly interval.

as you can see in the first picture, the time is 15:29:10. the UFO which is outside detection range will "disappear" in exactly 50 seconds., same with the second picture, you're 5 seconds past the half hour mark, meaning the alien flew into range at around the 25 minute mark.
the radar only "pings" on the half hour, and so it was detected THERE.

@ Warboy1982

Thanks, I understand better now why fast UFOs can be displayed far outside the radar coverage circle before disappearing, and can be well within the radar coverage circle before being spotted anew.

Is it possible to change the detection speed (or make it an ajustable option) to better reflect the radar detection. With fast UFOs (ex: speed: 5000), it's disturbing to pursue an UFO with several radars and see it disappear well after the radar detection zone, and see it reappear well inside the radar detection zone.

@ Aldorn

I'll do my best to spend less ;-)

I think the problem with shorter detection intervals is you risk getting a lot of popups for UFOs flying close to a radar border (I remember Xenonauts had this problem).

I personally prefer more popups messages (it's the goal for a radar, this can also be a player adjustable timer), rather than seeing a Battleship reappear near the center of the radar detection circle too late for an efficient response, or unable to intercept a Terror Ship before landing. Thirty minutes at speed 5000, it can be far inside the radar detection circle.

if i could decrease the radar check time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes that would triple the detection probability of radar correct
i always thought the ufo have some radar resistance so there is only a chance to find an ufo
for me getting 60% detection with one large radar would be too much

The percentage of UFOs detection must remain the same, and the Hyper-wave Decoder has 100% detection, only the display of UFOs should be is more precise, more frequent.

This "precision" would make the game considerably harder for the aliens.

You are correct, UFOs have different chances of detection based on size and altitude, and actual detection chance = radar detection * ufo detection (until Hyperwave Decoder which is always 100%), so even with precise radar detection, who knows how many UFOs you would still miss.
The radar ranges are just guidelines, not absolutes (remember everything in the game is RNG), if you don't like it you can go back to disabling them. :P
