[SOLVED] Image editors for modding?
« on: January 19, 2020, 08:29:56 pm »
What image editor do you use for modding in opexcom? Aside from GIMP i used paint.net and pinta; all have then feature to import palette.

Do you know about some other editor that has "exchange palette" function? IrfanView has it, bit it's not an editor; though a plugin called "Pain" is avaiable that allows some basic drawing options, see here

GIMP also works, but requires you to be a bit more careful with the palettes as it often likes to optimize out the transparent index 0 from the palette.

only png

Saving in .gif automatically converts the image in 256 colors, but also .png supports that palette,so what's the difference?

As the rest, gonna stick with paintet; it offers also lots of plugins, eve to save and open files in .psd format  8) some info about formats here

For 256 colors specific needs there is also GraFX2, for both win and linux!

The difference is that OpenXcom only fully supports PNG.
GIF doesn't work on MacOS version of OpenXcom for example.

Are you on win10? I have the CS4 Suite and I need to understand what to do next, since I can't stay on win7 forever. I read once it is incompatible with win10. Definitely won't buy Photoshop again, it costs way too much money and I hate the monthly fee type of deal they offer now.

Guess my mod is incompatible with MacOs...

Are you on win10?

Yes, it works just fine on Win10. Proof attached :)

Well, on 3200x1800 resolution it looks stupidly small, because back then UI scaling wasn't a thing... but I got used to that, and it's the same on Win7 anyway.

Actually photoshop C2 was not properly relased as freeware back in 2013; anyway i tried on a PC with win 10 but it crashes. Any other alternatives, and for palette what is another editor that easily handles them, especially when it comes to importing and converting? Anyone also gave a shot to adobe photo expres and other online editors? If so, the are capable to handle palettes of our beloved game? :)

As for it irfanview also has the feature to aply an imported palette, but only in .pal format, it possible use these to apply the one needed by the game? OXCE rovides them along the executable so it may get the job done, right?

All palette file formats create the same image at the end, it does not matter to openxcom which program you use, as long as you use the correct palette.

Yes, OXCE provides all palettes in JASC, RIFF and ACT format... all 3 work fine.

It may be possible to convert these .pal and .act files in .txt to use with some other software?
