Minor typographic request: non-breaking space
« on: November 14, 2016, 12:32:10 pm »
Can someone add (code) non-breaking space character into the game?
It will not change playability at all, it only slightly improves readibility of long texts.

Pardon my ignorance, but can you post some use cases for this?

I don't see much use for it.

Only thing I can think of is some long forgotten rules from elementary school, where they taught us to always put one-letter prepositions on new line (thus together with the word they belong to).

E.g. in Slovak language:
and = a
to = k
about = o
with = s
at = u
in = v
from = z

So instead of:
Code: [Select]
xxxx xxx x xxxx xxxx  xx  xxxx xxxx xxxxxxx xxx xxxx z
yyyy xxxx  xx  xxxx xxxx

it should be:
Code: [Select]
xxxx xxx x xxxx xxxx  xx  xxxx xxxx xxxxxxx xxx xxxx
z yyyy xxxx  xx  xxxx xxxx

PS: btw. who said English has short words? :)

Well, it's minor request  :)
These are not long forgotten rules for everybody  ;)
10% is adjective, 10 % is numeral + noun

Yeah, why bother with proper spelling. ::)

Ignoring this rule is a clear sign of poor writing skills and will get you corrected at any office I've worked for*, not to mention an actual writing job. (And my dad, a teacher, will scold you.) I can't see why X-Com should keep lower standards.

But I command your primary school for enforcing this, I'm not sure mine did. :)

* Unless you're a lawyer, spelling rules don't seem to apply to them for some reason.

I don't know if the rule is universal... I thought it applied to my native language only, maybe a few more.

"Long forgotten" only because I haven't written any formal (or even semi-formal) text in my native language for like 10 years. I use only German and English now and I don't think these rules apply there (I may be wrong tho).

Btw. my parents were also teachers and I was a good student :) I'd rate my writing skills as very good (if I need to), maybe a bit rusty by now. But nowadays, all my writing in Slovak has shrunk to instant messaging without any rules and even without any diacritics (no accents, carosn, circumflexes, umlauts, etc.).

Good to know there are people who still obey the rules tho  ;)

Yeah, I also thought I may have been too harsh, since I've been referring to my own language and I probably were too confident about how global this rule is... I guess it may just vary in importance between languages. :)
