I use them during assaults on Alien bases to watch for movements in areas where my agents are not going right now. Set up a position marker in a centre of a crossroad and you have a decent coverage.

They can be very useful against cult safehouses in the early game where you can only send two agents most of the time. Deploying one marker each, you'll have twice the number of targets for the enemy to shoot at. And they can cover your blind spots too.

I find them pretty handy for fighting in caves when I don't have enough agents to take every possible path
