OpenXcom requires a vanilla version of the original UFO: Enemy Unknown / X-COM: UFO Defense. It is not compatible with other games in the X-COM series. If you don’t own a copy, you can acquire one from Steam or Amazon.
Do not use modded versions of X-COM, as they may be incompatible with OpenXcom. Check the Installation documentation for more details.

DEB packages for Debian based distributions can be downloaded from http://knapsu.eu/openxcom/
Ubuntu users can use a dedicated PPA repository. Please do the following in a terminal:
# sudo add-apt-repository ppa:knapsu/openxcom
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install openxcom
In order to install in openSUSE do the following in a terminal:
# zypper -ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tzotsos/openSUSE_12.2/ home_tzotsos
# zypper refresh
# zypper install openxcom
Alternatively you can use the One-Click installer: http://software.opensuse.org/package/openxcom
In order to install in OpenBSD 5.0+ use the pkg_add command.
